A PLUS
The Arc of Lane County’s program, adult people learning useful skills, is a center based afternoon respite
program designed to provide instruction and practice of useful skills in an environment that encourages
independence and fosters cooperation. Focus is on those skills that will enable participants to more
fully participate in the responsibilities and pleasures of everyday life.
By providing supports at individual levels of achievement we ensure that every person enjoys some level
of growth and success.
Our method for success envisions three principles. First, that staff will be well informed of their responsibilities
and of the individual needs of the participants. This ensures the safety of each individual and the
consistency necessary for growth. Second, we hope to encourage enthusiasm for activities and reduce
anxiety by using a consistent schedule. In this way participants can know what to look forward to on each day.
The final principle is that each staff will have a good working knowledge of each participant. Every person is
unique in his or her likes and dislikes and by addressing a person in a proven, positive way we hope to
establish the kinds of relationships where people enjoy learning and growing.

The participants love our new computer lab where they can learn computer skills,
enjoy supervised web surfing, listen to music, play games or learn about subjects
that they are interested in.
